Argentinian elections
Javier Milei has won the Argentinian elections with a surprising 56% in the final run-off. Mr. Milei has already spoken about implementing drastic reforms, such as switching the local currency (the peso), in favour of the US dollar. He also promised to shut down several ministries, including the ones of culture, women, health, and education, in order to cut welfare payments and decrease bureaucracy. Among his most controversial claims is the desire to legalise the sale and purchase of human organs. “Today we embrace the Libertarian model so as to return to being a global power” he stated. His victory comes in a delicate time for Argentina, which faces an inflation rise to 143% and with 40% of Argentinians living in poverty.
The deal between Hamas and Israel
Hamas has freed twenty-four hostages, while Israel has released thirty-nine Palestinian prisoners. Thirteen of the people transferred out of Gaza were Israeli (some with dual nationality), ten were Thais and one was Filipino. The exchange happened hours after the four-day truce, mediated by Qatar, was put into action. The deal entails the release of 50 Israeli women and children, held captive by Hamas, for 150 Palestinian women and children detained in Israeli prisons.
Riot in Dublin
Thursday a riot took place in Dublin’s city centre. The agitation originated after three children and a school assistant were victims of a knife attack outside of a school. A five-year-old girl and the school care assistant are in serious condition. The attack was stopped thanks to the help of a 43-year-old Deliveroo rider, named Caio Benicio, who intervened by hitting the aggressor with his helmet. According to BBC sources, the suspected stabber is a 40-year-old Irish citizen. However, in the first hours after the attack news was circulating claiming that the aggressor was a foreign national. The head of the Irish police, Drew Harris, blamed the disorder on a “lunatic, hooligan faction driven by far-right ideology”. During the riot, several vehicles were set on fire, including police cars, trams, and buses, shops were looted, and multiple police officers were injured.
Drone attack on Kyiv
On Saturday, before dawn, Kyiv’s residents were woken up startled by explosions caused by the biggest drone attack on the city since the war began. According to officials, more than 75 Iranian-made Shahed drones were launched at the capital, and 74 of these were shot down. No deaths have been reported by this attack, however, at least five people remained injured.
